What Is The Difference Between A Scone And A Biscuit?

Scones, a British classic, are traditionally made withheavy creamand eggs, resulting in a rich and tender crumb. In contrast, biscuits, a staple in Southern U.S. cuisine, typically contain no egg and are crafted with either milk or tangy buttermilk, providing a flakier texture.

While both treats share similarities, such as a buttery taste and a crumbly nature, their distinct ingredients give them unique flavors and textures that cater to different preferences.

What’s In This Bacon And Cheese Scones Recipe

Savory BaconAndCheddar Cheese SconesRecipe (2)
  • Flour: The base of any good scone recipe, flour provides structure and ensures a tender crumb. I use all-purpose flourfor its versatility and reliable results.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt enhances the overall flavor of the scones, bringing out the savory notes of bacon and cheese.
  • Sugar: Just a touch of sugar balances the savoriness of the other ingredients, adding a subtle sweetness that complements the richness of the bacon and cheese.
  • Egg: The egg contributes to the scones’ richness and color, and helps bind the dough, ensuring that the scones hold their shape while baking.
  • Baking Powder: This leavening agent is crucial for achieving the perfect rise, resulting in scones that are light and fluffy.
  • Butter: Cold, unsalted butter is cut into thedry ingredients, creating tiny pockets of steam as it melts in the oven. This is key to achieving flaky, tender scones.
  • Cheese:Sharp cheddar cheeseis grated and mixed into the dough, providing a burst of creamy, tangy flavor in every bite.
  • Bacon: Cooked until crisp and then crumbled, bacon adds a smoky, savory depth to the scones that pairs beautifully with the sharpness of the cheddar cheese.
  • Green Onions: Finely choppedgreen onionslend a mild, peppery crunch, adding freshness and color to the rich flavors of bacon and cheese.
  • Heavy Cream: The liquid component of the dough, heavy creamadds moisture and richness, ensuring the scones are delightfully moist and tender.

Substitutions and Variations

For those looking to tweak thissavory scone recipeto suit their dietary needs or simply to experiment with new flavors, here are a few substitutions and variations:

  • Flour : For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flourwith your favorite gluten-free flour blend. Just be sure it includes xanthan gum to help hold the dough together.
  • Cheese: While sharp cheddar adds a rich flavor, feel free to try other types of cheese such as Gruyère, Swiss, or even a spicy Pepper Jack to add a different flavor profile to your scones.
  • Bacon: If you’re vegetarian or just looking to reduce your meat intake, consider replacing the bacon with a vegetarian bacon alternative or adding extra vegetables like diced bell peppers or sun-dried tomatoes for a burst of flavor.
  • Heavy Cream: For a lighter version, you can substituteheavy creamwithwhole milkor a mix of milk and yogurt. This will still give you creamy scones but with fewer calories.
  • Additions: Feel free to incorporate other ingredients into the dough. Some popular additions include chopped nuts for a crunchy texture or various common herbs such as chives, dill, or parsley for a fresh flavor twist.

  • Don’t overbake the scones. Make sure to check on the scones, as if the scones cook too long they will be dry.

Storing Tips

Because these cheddar scones contain cheese and bacon, I recommend refrigerating the scones. Place in anairtight container, bag, orplastic wrap. Then, when you want to eat one let it warm up toroom temperature, or warm it up in the microwave or oven.

Another thing is you can freeze scones for 2-3 months. Just freeze in a proper container or bag. Then thaw in the fridge and then reheat.

Recipe FAQ’s

Why are scones so dry?

If you over-knead the dough, you will find the scones can become over-dry. The other thing is not measuring the ingredients properly it will give you a dry or crumbly texture.

How can I tell when the scones are perfectly cooked?

The scones are done when they have a golden-brown color on the top and bottom and feel firm to the touch. An inserted toothpick or skewer should come out clean or with a few crumbs attached but no wet batter.

Why did my scones not rise properly?

There are a few reasons scones don’t rise as they should. The most common is overworking the dough, which can deflate the raising agent. Also, ensure that your baking powder is not expired, as this is a key ingredient for the scones to rise.

Can I add different fillings to this recipe?

Scones are versatile, and you are encouraged to experiment with different fillings. Consider adding diced apples and cinnamon for a sweet twist, or olives and feta for another savory option. The base dough remains the same, so feel free to get creative.
