The Perfect Smoothie Ingredients

When you start to make a smoothie, there are the few things you’ll need. Just add something from each category below and you’ll have the best fruit smoothie.

I love adding something from each of the following categories. You can totally only add something from the first two categories if you’d like though.

Decide The Liquid Base- The first thing you need to do is decide the liquid you want to use. You can use water, coconut water, coconut milk, regular milk, or your favorite nut milk. I almost always use almond milk when I make smoothies.

Choose Your Fruit- When I make smoothies, I try to only use frozen fruit and not fresh fruit. This will help make a thick smoothie without needing to use a handful of ice.

I almost always add frozen bananas or fresh banana slices to my smoothies, especially if I’m only using water as the liquid base. Bananas will make your smoothie so creamy!

You can also add fresh or frozen veggies to make your smoothies even healthier. I love to add spinach and make it a green smoothie. Smoothies are a great way to hide leafy greens!

Add Healthy Fats- My favorite healthy fats I like to add to smoothies are peanut butter, almond butter, any nut butters, chia seeds, or flax seeds. I love all the health benefits they offer! Plus, the nut butter makes them taste so good.

Add A Sweetener- Add your favorite sweetener to your smoothie! I love to add a small amount of honey when I make my frozen fruit smoothie. Maple syrup is another great addition.

Add Anything Else- Add hemp seeds, cinnamon, turmeric, protein powder, vanilla greek yogurt, or anything else you’d like to make your smoothie full of even more health benefits! There are so many great options. That’s one of the reasons I love smoothies so much. They’re delicious and SO healthy for you!

Smoothie Tips

  • To save time, bulk prep smoothies! Every couple of weeks, I’ll add all of the ingredients into ziplock bags, zip them up, and put them into the freezer. That way, when I want to have a smoothie, all I need to do is take a smoothie bag out of the freezer, put it into a blender, add ice cubes if I need to, and add the liquid. It’s so easy!
  • If your smoothie is to thick or it won’t blend well, just add more water!
  • Make sure you wash your blender immediately after you use it. When I do this, I usually just rinse it and everything comes off easily. If you don’t wash it immediately, the smoothie gets so hard and completely sticks to the blender. Then, it’s much harder to clean.
  • If you’re just using water in your smoothie, add vanilla protein powder, vanilla extract, or yogurt. This will help the flavor and consistency of your smoothie!
  • To add more flavor, change the 1 cup water each recipe calls for to 1/2 cup fruit juice and 1/2 cup water. I love to add orange juice or apple juice!
  • Any time any fresh bananas aren’t eaten in my household, I cut up the bananas and put them into a plastic bag to keep them in the freezer. I pull them out and add them to my smoothies whenever I need them!
